Autumn's Call: Let it FallAutumn catches our attention by dressing up and then undressing. Summer's leaf-green robes turn an array of flamboyant colors and then slowly fall away, revealing the shoulder of a branch here and the torso of a trunk there until much of the landscape is bare. Nature provides us with quite a show as trees and plants shed their bright leaves, freeing themselves of what is no longer necessary. As a keen observer of Nature, I deeply appreciate the qualities of each season. Autumn, it appears, celebrates the shedding of the old.... and we are all invited to the party! Imagine your invitation fluttering down into your hands, scripted upon a golden leaf:'Tis the Season to Let GoColor what no longer serves you with gratitudeand let it fall away Grateful, Grateful, Grateful, Gone...
RSVP "Yes" and lighten up! Living with what you no longer want or need is heavy, cumbersome, and blocks the flow of vital energy that nurtures your life. Autumn encourages you to be like a tree and shed the possessions, relationships, attitudes, and habits that don't serve you now. In doing so, you align with the essence of Fall and prepare your inner and outer space to receive Winter's gifts of stillness, introspection, and the inception of new dreams. Contemplative Practice: Stand or sit near a deciduous tree whose leaves are changing color. Choose a fallen leaf, feel its lightness, and observe its colors. How does the leaf symbolize a person, place, object, or way of being that has passed - or is passing - out of your life? What can you do now to honor and celebrate it? Have you, with gratitude, let it go? If you haven't let it go yet, how can you do so now? Consider jotting down your thoughts in a journal and pressing the leaf between the pages.....

Essential Feng Shui® - the Secret CEO Success

 A few years ago, I was the Admin Assistant/HR/Sales Coordinator and more for a corporate start up. Yes, I wore a lot of hats, and if you've ever been in the middle
of a Start Up, you'll see that most everyone does. Wear a lot of hats. It's actually kind of a scramble of hats, tasks, deadlines and communications. With the team's constant overlapping of emailing, texting and calling, you can imagine my surprise when, one-by-one, I overheard each employee complaining that the CEO was "totally disconnected" from the rest of the team. "He had no idea" what was going on, they said.

Then I got it: He worked on his computer - at his L-shaped desk - with his back to the door. (In this example, imagine you're standing in the doorway. His laptop was to his left. So, this is an after example.) 

Thank Goodness he was open to Essential Feng Shui® and so, simply and quickly, we turned him, his computer, and his chair into a more Powerful Position. He could now see out his door into the rest of the office space; And, more importantly, all the employees could now see his face. Overnight the side comments evolved into, "We have a great boss, he just KNOWS what we need, when we need it."

 Fall Vegetable Gardening 
Fall is my favorite time of year. Although the shorter days and cooler temperatures mean the end of summer, there is still so much more to come-the blaze of color, fall planters, pumpkins and that nip in the air. Crisp autumn days present the perfect opportunity to plant a fall vegetable garden. With many people focusing on eating healthy, what better than to grow your own vegetables. It's also a great opportunity to involve your children in the project. Watch their excitement as the plants grow! You can even cut back on the grocery bills. A study done by the University of Missouri showed that a $50 investment towards gardening supplies could produce up to $1,200 worth of produce! Now that you know the benefits of gardening, let's get started! If you already had a summer vegetable garden then there is no need to till the soil, just remove all debris and break up the soil. If this is your first vegetable garden, you will need to till the soil. Adding a soil amendment is the next step. Here at Sickles Market, we recommend Bumper Crop. Growing healthy plants starts with good soil and Bumper Crop provides all the nutrients needed for stronger healthier plants. To grow a fall vegetable garden, you have to grow veggies that require a growing time with cooler temperatures. Cool season and warm season vegetables each have different characteristics that make them suitable for gardening. Cool season vegetables are often low-growing, green and leafy. Because the vegetables grow close to the ground, they do not freeze as easily as warm season vegetables do. Kale, spinach, lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, beets, carrots, escarole, Swiss chard and radishes will all grow very easily this time of year. You can find all of our fall veggies in 4 packs and 6 packs.
 

 
Different plants will mature at different rates. Radishes, for example, will germinate in 6-10 days and mature in 25-30 days, while carrots take about 60-90 days to mature. For vegetables that mature quickly, you can sow a new batch every few weeks throughout the fall for season-long harvest. UpkeepA fall garden, like a summer garden, typically requires about an inch of water weekly. New transplants and seedlings require close monitoring the first few weeks and may need more frequent watering. Established plants should be watered less frequently- about once a week. Just like summer, you will battle with a fresh wave of cool-season weeds in your garden, including common chickweed. The best and easiest way to get rid of these weeds is by hand, as to not contaminate your new vegetables. Reaping the benefitsAfter all of your patience and hard work, expect many delicious meals ahead of you this fall. Your body will be craving something hearty and filling and these veggies are sure to provide. Lush salads, flavorful soups, roasted vegetables, robust stir-fries and countless other options will make their way to your dinner table. We've even included a few recipes that are sure to be so good that you will want to grow a vegetable garden again next year. Enjoy! Recipes Harvest Vegetable Soup ½ C. chopped celery ½ C. chopped onion 1 C. chopped carrots1 14.5 oz. can diced tomatoes, drained2 C. vegetable broth1 large potato peeled and diced1 can garbanzo beans, drained1 C. barley1 C. spinach leaves, chopped1 15 oz. can peas, drained¼ tsp. thyme½ tsp. black pepper¼ tsp. garlic powder In a large pot over high heat, combine all ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Serve with crusty bread. Honey Dijon Carrots 3 C. washed carrots1 TBS olive oil1 ½ TBS Dijon mustard1 TBS honeyHeat the oil in skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté the carrots in oil for about 10 minutes, or until tender. Mix Dijon mustard and honey together and stir into skillet. Be sure to completely coat the carrots.
