March Outdoor To Do List
Winter is finally almost over, and spring means it’s time for home maintenance projects we’ve
neglected over the winter. Here are some simple tips to keep your home operating in tip-top
condition.

* Inspect your roof for damage, loose or blistered shingles. Have damaged shingles
replaced if they’re on less than 20% of the roof. Reroof if damaged shingles cover more
than 20% of the roof.
* Remove debris from gutters and downspouts and patch any holes. Downspouts
should direct water at least 5 feet away from your foundation.
* Trim branches and shrubs that are touching your home. These can provide a pathway
for bugs and excess moisture to enter your home.
* Remove dead branches that could potentially fall on your house.
* Clean out basement window wells.
*Talk to your landscaper or local garden center about the best way to enrich your soil
for the types of plants in your yard. Proper fertilization can keep your soil and plants in
great shape throughout the year.
* Do spring yard clean up and edge beds.
* Top dress and reseed your lawn. Mow when grass gets to be about 4” high, but don’t
mow it too short.
* If you’ve postponed tool care, late winter is a good time to get in the garage and inspect
your garden equipment.
* Examine your driveway surface for damage. If you plan to reseal the driveway, call
ahead to schedule, summer is a peak time.
* Use a garden hose to remove the film left by dirty rain and/or snow from your siding
and deck.
* Remove wet leaves and debris from your deck, front porch and around your house on
a regular basis. Allowing debris to accumulate can trap water, lead to staining or mold
build-up, as well as create an ideal environment for termites.
* Check your weather stripping around doors and windows. The winter season may
have caused some damage. Also remove any storm windows and replace with screens.
* Celebrate spring by cleaning the garage. Hold a yard sale, or organize a community
yard sale with neighbors. Dispose of paint thinners, household cleaners and pesticides
properly.
